Pierre-Charles Marcel

Pierre-Charles Marcel (1910–1992) was a leading French neo-Calvinist Christian theologian. He was influenced by Auguste Lecerf (1873–1943), who had suggested that Marcel study Herman Dooyeweerd’s Christian philosophy.

Marcel was a pastor of the Reformed Church of France at St. Germain-en-Laye for about fifty years. He was, for a while, the secretary of the French Bible Society. In 1950, he founded La Revue Réformée  and was its editor. After his death Paul Wells took over the editorship. Marcel was also an associate professor at the Free Faculty of Reformed Theology in Aix-en-Provence

Paul Wells, Marcel’s successor as editor of the La Revue Reformée, writes:

“Pierre Charles Marcel was, like his colleague from the Reformed Church of France, Pierre Courthial, a disciple of the Calvinist theologian Auguste Lecerf. When he died in 1942, he took over the presidency of the Calvinist Society of France. In 1950, P. Marcel founded La Revue Réformée and became its first editor. He was responsible for its publication alone until 1978. Under his leadership, this publication acquired notoriety in the international Orthodox Reformed community. Neither Marcel nor Courthial saw their biblical Calvinist theology be well received in their Church in which they felt marginalized. Their work often had more resonance abroad than in France. After Courthial’s arrival at the Free Faculty of Reformed Theology of Aix-en-Provence, newly founded in 1974, the links between La Revue reformée and the faculty of the Faculty became closer. Marcel was one of the Faculty’s associate professors.”

Marcel wrote two works on Dooyeweerd’s philosophy. (For more details see  here )

Colin Wright writes:

The second thesis:  General Theory of the Law Spheres: Introduction to the theory of the temporal structure of reality in Herman Dooyeweerd’s Philosophy of the Law-Idea , was completed four years later and for which he was awarded the degree of Doctor en Theologie.
