Sander Griffioen

Sander Griffioen (1941), was born in Loenen aan de Vecht, The Netherlands. He studied at the Vrije Universiteit – Amsterdam, where he graduated in political economy and philosophy. He earned a doctor’s degree with a dissertation on Hegel’s appreciation of finitude (De Roos en het Kruis, Assen: van Gorcum, 1976). He taught philosophy at the Free University from 1979-2002 and spent three years as Senior Member at the Toronto Institute for Christian Studies. He held a special professorship for Calvinistic Philosophy at Leiden University from 1979 to 1991. From 1991-2001 he served as chairman of the Association for Reformational Philosophy. 

From 2002-2006 he was special professor for intercultural philosophy at the Social Sciences   Department of the Vrije Universiteit, his area of specialization being Chinese culture. In 2005 and 2007 he gave courses on Chinese thought at Tilburg University.

 In 2002-2003 he served on the Dutch visitation committee for philosophy, and in 2004-2005 on the Flemish visitation committee.
